Charlie Liu

Charlie Liu has just turned eight. He began learning piano at the age of four, and won his first competition at age 5. In 2007 at age 6, he had his first solo recital, won 1st place in Massachusetts State Competition (age 6-7 group), and performed on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. He also took 2nd place in New Jersey State Competition (age 7 group) later that year. Charlie has never failed to win in the 10 competitions he took part in and the awards he received in 2008 so far include winner of the AADGT Passion of Music 2008 International Piano Competition, Gold Prize of the American Fine Arts Festival Competition, 2nd Prize of the Bradshaw and Buono International Competition, among others. He has performed at various prestigious venues including the Carnegie Hall (Weill Recital) and Merkin Concert Hall. Charlie currently studies with Mrs.Ingrid Clarfield of Princeton, NJ and is fortunate to have also been instructed by Ms. Tatyana Berketova of Brookline, MA; Ms. Irina Kirilenko of Northfield, NH and Ms. Soo Kyung Cho of Princeton Junction, NJ. While Charlie plays piano regularly - spending an average of an hour and half or so on the piano per day - he enjoys many other activities very much as well. He's an avid athlete - he plays hockey 4-5 times a week on the Princeton Mites B team. He also plays soccer, tennis and chess, likes to swim and has a dark blue belt in Tae Kwon Do. Indoors, he enjoys playing video games and doing basic computer programming.

Anna Larsen

Anna Larsen is eight years old and lives in Boston. She goes to regular public school, and studies piano and composition on the weekend at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School with Ramon Rivera and Alla Cohen. Anna started playing piano when she was three years old and learned music very quickly. She played her first 2 part Bach Invention at 4 years old and first Mozart Sonata at 5. Now, Anna practices about two hours a day with some additional time after school for theory and composition homework. Anna dreams to play with an orchestra and to travel around the world playing the piano.

Derek Wang

Derek Wang is ten years old. He began taking piano lessons at age 5 and has been a student of Mrs. Dorothy Shi. He has also taken piano lessons with renowned pianist Mr. Yin Cheng-Zong and with Mrs. Elena Rossman on music expression. He lives in Boston with his parents and older brother and is currently a 5th grader at Mt. Alvernia Academy. Derek, an avid Star Wars fan, also enjoys swimming, baseball, computer and video games, and math. His favorite composers are Chopin, Bach, and Beethoven. Derek has been the first place winner of the Bay State Piano Competition of the Massachusetts Music Teachers Association in 2008 (9 years old division), 2007 (8 years old division), and 2006 (7 years old division).
